VANAMAHOTSAV

The day begins with the Director-Education, Ms. Anjum Babukhan, administering The Glendale Green Pledge to the entire school and the parents of Grade I.

As said by George Nakashima, a simple wood worker, ‘A tree is our most intimate contact with nature’. And Vanamahostav, a festival of the forest celebrated all round India, is a one day when we all get together and appreciate the importance of that contact. Vanamahostav was initiated in 1950, by K.M.Munshi, the then Union Minister for Agriculture and Food to create awareness and enthusiasm in the people for the conservation of trees.   more.....

The qualifying teams for the grand finale were DPS – Hyderabad and Meridian. After a heated informative, assertive debate DPS – Hyderabad went on to become the winners and the runners up were Meridian. The winner and runners up walked away with both rolling and retainable trophies along with cash awards. The two days observation of an esteemed panel of judges comprising Ms. Vaishali Bisht, Ms. Arati Kodali – Education Consultant and Mr. Sachidananda Mohanty – Professor of English at the University of Hyderabad brought to light the best speaker in - Santosh of DPS – Hyderabad. All in all it was a very enthusiastic event with lot of learning.

Prof Sachidananda Mohanty, English Dept., Central University, Hyderabad, appreciated the idea of having a Cambridge-style debate at the school level and lauded Glendale for having started it as an inter school event.

He said that all schools must have regular debates. This will make the jobs of universities easier as India has very little or no debates at the school level and hence it becomes difficult to inculcate it at the university level.
